The Honourable Jill Dunlop, Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities, formally announced $24M in support of Perimeter Institute, plus further investments in other Ontario-based science organizations.

The Province of Ontario officially announced its continued investment in Perimeter Institute’s research, training, and outreach.

In a visit to Perimeter on Tuesday, The Honourable Jill Dunlop, Ontario Minister of Colleges and Universities, addressed researchers and community leaders.

“Ontario is committed to supporting trailblazing work that will help ensure the province remains a leader in advanced science, technology, and innovation, and is a jurisdiction of choice for scientific research,” said Minister Dunlop.

“With this investment, the province will be in a better position to attract, develop, and retain talented researchers so we can continue making major advances and solving the complex problems facing us today, right here in Ontario.”

Perimeter Institute Director Robert Myers said the province’s support of Perimeter since inception has made Ontario a global hub for pioneering research.

“Ontario continues to be a powerhouse in advanced scientific research and leading-edge discoveries largely because of investments like the ones announced here today,” said Myers.

“On behalf of Perimeter Institute, let me express our gratitude for today’s expression of confidence from the Government of Ontario. This ongoing support by the Province, coupled with investment from other public and private partners, will enable the Institute to continue attracting top talent and accelerating the research that is vital to a more innovative and prosperous future.”

The afternoon’s celebration of science in Ontario also included the Minister’s announcement of investments in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Laboratory (SNOLAB) and for Advanced Research Computing. Those initiatives, along with Perimeter, were noted for their “strategic value to the province” in the 2021 Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, released November 4.

The 2021 Economic statement reads in part:

Research and innovation are key drivers of productivity and economic growth.... The Perimeter Institute will continue to undertake fundamental research in cosmology and quantum computing.... Ontario’s investments will leverage funding from federal and private-sector partners and attract world-class talent to help ensure that Ontario continues to be internationally competitive for global research and development activities.

Perimeter Institute is the world’s largest research hub devoted to theoretical physics. The independent Institute was founded in 1999 to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos. Research at Perimeter is motivated by the understanding that fundamental science advances human knowledge and catalyzes innovation, and that today’s theoretical physics is tomorrow’s technology. Located in the Region of Waterloo, the not-for-profit Institute is a unique public-private endeavour, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada, that enables cutting-edge research, trains the next generation of scientific pioneers, and shares the power of physics through award-winning educational outreach and public engagement.
