Dr. Jim Todd
Creating a Lasting Legacy
Dr. Jim Todd, a San Antonio native, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in applied arts and sciences and a master’s degree in education, both from Texas State University. However his path to Wayland was a long and winding one.
After serving in the Air Force from 1966-1969 and working for Sherwin Williams Paint as a Dealer/Sales Manager, Todd and his wife started their own picture frame company in 1974. The couple had two factories in Mexico and 25 retail outlets located across the country. In 1991, Todd sold his company to a competitor. Then in 1996 while working as the marketing education coordinator of North East Independent School District in San Antonio, Todd began to pursue his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the age of 44.
From 1999 to 2012, Todd continued to work at North East ISD as a special populations coordinator and as a marketing education coordinator/administrator. In 2006, Todd earned his doctorate in education from Texas A&M University and later became an adjunct assistant professor of education at Wayland. In 2012 took the position of director of campus operations at the San Antonio campus, both positions he holds to this day.
Being a non-traditional student himself, Todd says he understands where San Antonio students are, “both in educational experience, as well as career and managing time for writing, researching and striving for a strong GPA. As an employee who also gets to spend time with students in the classroom setting, I see how 20 different students, regardless of ability or background, form a united front and assist in the classroom activities, using smart working, rather than working alone. My students buy into the Pioneer Spirit, because many of them are the first in their family to enter college. Many are the very first to explore their future as a college graduate.”
Todd added that he loves that Wayland lets him introduce students to Jesus Christ if they don’t already know Him, and he enjoys growing and improving his marketing craft to better serve students. To him, teaching is more than just a job.
“By becoming an instructor at Wayland, you’re creating a lasting legacy for the world by providing guidance and support to students. You’re giving them the tools to live happy and productive lives.”
Among Dr. Todd’s various volunteer activities are serving as deacon at First Baptist Church in San Antonio, board chairman at the Rite Care Clinic for Dyslexia and emeritus
